XR0ZR - 2013 - 6 meters

XR0ZR team with CE2AWW

We arrived to Santiago on the 7th of November and we met with Dale, CE2AWW who was waiting for us at the airport. We had a late lunch and it was a pleasure to talk with him about HF contests and 6 meters dx.

We left Santiago the morning of the 8th with two charter planes and arrived to the island after two and a half hours. Landing was quite good in spite the small landing lane.

We took a small boat to Cumberland Bay with heavy waves, and after one and a half hour we arrived to the town.

We went to the hotel and first problems. Space was so small to fit the antennas, location was worse than expected with high mountains to EU, AF, SA and VK/ZL. HF guys started to put their antennas and I had to put 6m8gj antenna inside a small garden within two buildings and very close to HF antennas.

We arranged two sites inside the hotel, one should be for 6 meters and 80-160, and the other for 40-10. We arranged to have 12 hours split between 24 and 50 MHz, so I would have 6 meters from 16 gmt to 04 gmt (more or less). With this schedule I should have been able to work 6m when openings should appear and EME windows first days. This was not the case. It's difficult to work with HF guys, unfortunately. HF QRM was very hugh in spite of filters.

Finally we worked 169 stations from EU, SA, NA, AF, in 34 DXCC countries. This is the resume per day and per DXCC:

South and Central America: most qsos were in this area, extending up to XE1 and KP4. Conditions were amazing with late TEP providing s9++ signals from Caribe and HK, YV, etc. Signals were so good we were able to work side or back scatter to PY, LU and CE.

Africa: We worked several days into EA8. In spite the bad location we had several qsos with s5-s7 signals. I never knew from where the signals were coming.  I was able to hear EA8AK and EA8DBM beaming directly to them  at 45 deg AZ and antenna elevated 30 degrees to pass the mountain or with the antenna beaming to north… No other signals from Africa received (takeoff to TJ or ZS was up to 40 degrees L ) Worked CN2R, EA8AJ, EA8AK, EA8CK, EA8DBM and EA8EY. Heard CT3??

Europe: Same path than EA8, signals were distorted possibly due to hill edge path and mixed with HF qrm, making very difficult to copy s1-s2 signals. Worked EA3GP, EA6SX, EA7KW, CT1HZE.

North America: We were expecting much better conditions to states. We had no F2 openings and only one day, November 14th, we were able to work south Texas on TEP. It was amazing how you may be working KP4s at s9 and nothing coming from Florida. But we know, TEP has an edge and game is over behind it. Worked K5DU, K5NA, N5AA, N5DG, W3UUM, W5OZI, W9BF.

Pacific/Japan: We heared JL8GFB for 5 minutes and KH6/B for 30 minutes, but no qsos were done unfortunately.

EME: In spite of the low power and qrm we worked 9 stations: G8BCG, ES6RQ, K2ZD, K6MYC, N3XX, N7NW, W6BBS, ON4GG, ON4IQ. Heard too: UT7QF, S59A, FK8CP, ZL3NW, W7MEM, W7GJ.

And That’s all. Thanks to all who supported us, all who where trying to work us and all we worked.
